Program Overview

Spend almost 2 weeks in Europe next summer and earn 3 course units!
International experiences are becoming increasingly important for health care professionals to gain global perspectives on health care, as well as broadening their cultural awareness. The itinerary is full of unique visits to reputable hospitals and institutions like the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nurses in Geneva.The program is open to upper division undergraduate and graduate level nursing students from The University of Memphis and any accredited public or private university.

Undergraduate - NURS 4309: Global Perspectives on Nursing
Credit hours: 3 semester unitsCourse Description:
This study abroad program is designed for undergraduate nursing students interested in increasing their understanding of international health care issues as they relate to nursing. The course intent is to broaden the student’s worldview and global perspective of nursing and health care systems.
Prerequisites: NURS 3017/3018 or permission of the faculty
Graduate - NURS 7811: Global Perspectives on Nursing and Health Policy
Credit hours: 3 semester unitsCourse Description:
This study abroad program is designed for graduate nursing students interested in increasing their understanding of international health care issues as they relate to nursing practice and global health policy. The course intent is to broaden the student’s worldview and global perspective of health care and nursing.
Prerequisites: Admission to an approved Graduate School of Nursing, or permission of the faculty
Cultural Activities
3 nights in Paris, France• Enjoy a boat tour in Paris on the Seine River
• Visit a hospital in Paris to learn more about their trauma unit
• Guided tour of the Hospital Museum “Musée de l’Assistance Public-Hôpitaux de Paris”
2 nights in Geneva, Switzerland
• Guided walking tour of Geneva
• Visit to the WHO or UNAIDS
• Visit to the International Council of Nurses
5 nights in Strasbourg, France
• Guided walking tour of Strasbourg
• Cycling tour through the Parc de Pourtalès
• Guided tour along the famous “Route du Vin” including entrance to the Castle Haut
Koenigsbourg and a visit to an Alsatian winery including a wine tasting
• Entrance to Albert Schweitzer Museum in his house in Gunsbach
• Visit to a hospital in Strasbourg
1 night in Heidelberg, Germany
• Entrance to the Heidelberg Castle and guided tour of the German Pharmacy Museum
• Visit to a mental health facility in Germany
Field trips and excursions in Germany
• Visit to the University Hospital of Freiburg center of Nursing Education
• Visit to the University Hospital of Freiburg to learn more about issues related to nursing in Germany
Housing & Meals
- 3 nights in Paris, France in a hotel
- 2 nights in Geneva, Switzerland
- 5 nights in Strasbourg, France in a castle - Château de Pourtalès
- 1 night in Heidelberg, Germany
- Student will be housed in twin rooms, with private bathroom

Teaching: Ms. Jenkins is an experienced nurse educator, member of the nursing faculty at the University of Memphis, and board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She has traveled extensively abroad.
Ms. Jenkins serves on the Student Affairs Committee, is on the board of Beta Theta Chapter-at-Large, Sigma Theta Tau International. She is an active member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Academic Requirements - Acceptance into the program requires successful completion of all relevant prerequisites. There is no need to be on campus to complete the course requirements. Course content and assignments can be accessed and submitted online.
Selection Criteria - A limited number of spaces are available each semester, so students are strongly encouraged to apply early to secure your place in the program.
