Liberal Studies Senior Seminar
Program Overview

Five weeks studying in Rome, with all its ancient, medieval and Renaissance splendor. Students can take up to 2 courses for credit at University of Houston, and potentially transferable to other schools. Class time and assignments will be interspersed with organized visits in Rome, with excursions to Pompeii, Naples and Assisi, and plenty of free time to explore Rome and visit other parts of Italy.

Liberal Studies Senior Seminar
The Liberal Studies required capstone course. A “great books” seminar with a reading list tailored to make the most of our Rome experience. Electronic texts included in program fee.Additional courses, depending on the number of participants:

• History and Politics of Globalization
Professional visits & excursions
As part of the course, a number of visits and excursions to places related to the course topics, such as museums, institutions and archaeological sites, will be arranged. For details, see the itinerary in the cultural program section.

Sat. June 2
• Depart for Rome, Italy (airfare not included)
Sun. June 3
• Arrive in Rome
• Travel independently to St. John’s University and check into rooms
• Evening welcome reception with beverages
Mon. June 4 - Class day
• Orientation walking tour of the St. John’s University campus by faculty
• Guided walking tour of the city with your on-site coordinator
• Welcome dinner at a local restaurant

• Guided walking tour of the city by faculty
Wed. June 6 - Class day
• Visit the Museo della Civiltà Romana as part of your class*
Thurs. June 7
• Take a private guided tour of the Vatican museums
and the St. Peter’s Basilica*

Suggestion -Take the train to Florence and discover
the art and architectural treasures

• Self-guided tour of the Galleria Borghese*

• Visit the Capitoline Museums*
• Travel by train to Frascati and explore the town together with your
faculty leader (train tickets from Rome to Frascati will be arranged)

• Travel by private bus to Pompeii and take a private guided
tour of Ancient Pompeii.* Afterwards, continue to Naples
and take a private guided tour of the National Archaeological
Museum of Naples*

• Visit the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus*

• Explore the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Palatine*

walking tour of the city including the Basilica of
San Francesco d’Assisi (St. Francis)*

Suggestions - Consider a ride to Tivoli, and visit one of the
town’s most famous sights, the Villa d’Este

• Travel by train to Castel Gandolfo, which is still
used by the Pope as summer residence and explore it together
with your faculty leader

Work on your coursework or opt to visit Castelli Romani.
The Castelli Romani (“Castles of Rome”) is a group of
communes which are located at short distance south-east
to Rome, at the feet of the Alban Hills.

Housing & Meals
Students will be housed in twin or triple rooms with shared bathrooms at the student residence of St. John’s University Rome; shared kitchens are available for student use.
There is free use of library facilities and computer lab with access to online library resources at St. John’s University Rome campus.
