20th Century World History in Berlin
Program Overview
UC San Diego Global Seminar in Berlin, Germany

Travel Dates: June 30 - Aug. 4, 2012
Few other cities on the globe offer such a rich and multi-layered past as Berlin. We will explore late 19th and 20th century history through extensive visits to Berlin's many museums and historical sites. We will get to experience Berlin's many diverse neighborhoods and local cultures. Berlin also has an extremely lively cultural scene with (English language) movie theaters, open-air concerts, art galleries, and theaters.
As a truly global city, you can get excellent Thai or Indian food in Berlin as well as such signature German dishes as the famous "curry sausage." Or you can do your class readings in one of the numerous sidewalk cafes while sipping a cappuccino and enjoying the lively urban scene.
The seminar does not require any previous knowledge of German or European history. All you need is a basic curiosity regarding the major developments that shaped the modern world as well as a willingness to immerse yourself in the life and culture of one of the great capital cities of the 20th Century.
The Global Seminar program is not limited to the University of California San Diego and is open to all college and university students. The program consists of a package of two UCSD courses taught by a UCSD faculty member (in this case, Patrick Patterson). All instruction is in English. Lodging, site-visits, transportation within the city, daily breakfast and some additional meals are provided (though transportation to Berlin is not).

Making of the Modern World 6 GS - The Twentieth Century and Beyond
This course will cover a number of the most important dimensions of world history - political, social, cultural, intellectual, religious, etc. - during the period from 1900 to the present. Major themes will include: the century's many wars and efforts to guarantee peace; liberalism, democracy, and the ideologies that have competed with them (e.g., fascism, communism); revolutions and the concept of revolution; capitalism, industrialization, "underdevelopment," and globalization; secularization, secularism, and the continued vitality of religious commitment; mass society and popular culture; nations, nationalism, and national identity; imperialism, de-colonialization, and challenges to European power; the cultural, economic, and political order of contemporary society and challenges to that order (e.g., feminism, 1960s counterculture, the Greens); the problem of defining the "modern" world. There will be a special emphasis on the role of law and the concept of human and individual rights.Find more course details about this program on the UCSD Global Seminar website

HIEU 152 GS: The Worst of Times: Everyday Life in Authoritarian and Dictatorial Societies
This course is an outgrowth of Prof. Patterson's primary areas of research, the nature of popular culture and everyday life under communism in Eastern Europe. Citizens' experiences of communism in the German Democratic Republic, and in Berlin in particular, will naturally be an important focus of the course, as will life under the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945. But the inquiry will also extend into problems of authoritarian rule more generally, exploring the ways in which ordinary people have coped with, endured, obeyed, resisted, supported, compromised with, and sometimes ignored the dictatorial regimes that sought to control their minds and lives, and the minds and lives of others. With these questions at the forefront, we will consider the communist and fascist experiences in an explicitly comparative context, drawing on the record of other authoritarian governments (cases addressed in the assignments and in lectures may include, for example, Franco's Spain and Salazar's Portugal, Iran after the Islamic Revolution, Pinochet's Chile, the Philippines under Marcos, communist China, Cuba, and Vietnam).Find more course details about this program on the UCSD Global Seminar website
