Program Overview
Central and East European Studies Program (CESP) is a one-semester program held in English
focusing on issues of Central and East European economies, societies and cultures. It is offered at the University of Economics Prague and reviews the past and investigates the present and future of the developing economies, societies, politics, and languages of these countries. Students of the program also have the opportunity to register in several university courses in fields such as finance, computers, psychology, game theory, and many more, which are also taught in English.
Cultural field trips to famous Czech cities connected with visits to well-known companies are an important part of this study abroad program in order to gain practical knowledge about the Czech Republic.

Courses
All courses are taught in English. Subject areas include economics, management, marketing, politics, trade practices, law, philosophy, history and culture. Students choose at least three and a maximum of four courses. Each course consists of 4 teaching hours per week and 28 classroom units total. (1 classroom unit = 2 x 45 min.)Transferable Academic Credit:
Upon successful completion and regular attendance of the course, each student will receive a transcript and earn 28 ECTS credit points (= 12 US credits) through the University of Economics. The amount of transferable credits is at the discretion of your own university regulations. Course Registration
Subject
Areas that are covered by the program are: Czech Language, Economics,
History, International Business, International Finance, International
Relations, Marketing, Media Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and
Sociology.
A complete list of all course titles, their descriptions and short
resumes of professors who teach the courses will be available approx. 2
months prior the starting date of the program and will be sent to you by
email.
Students should choose at least three courses, although under special circumstances permission may be granted for a student to take fewer. The maximum of registered courses is five. All courses are held based on student demand, since the courses are selected directly on the application and registration form, where students should also include a second and third choice for each course in case there is a scheduling conflict.
Grading Methods and Schedule
The professors are encouraged to include
evaluations of written tests and assignments as part of their final
grade compilation. Attendance is compulsory to all CESP courses and
forms at least 20% of the grade.
Each course is 4 teaching hours per week. Each semester consists of 13 course weeks. Fridays are usually free for study tours, homework, attending guest lectures, or other activities.

Cultural Activities
Taking part in the cultural activities and field trips during the semester is an important part of being a student at CESP and gaining practical knowledge about the Czech Republic. A variety of field trips to famous Czech cities connected with excursions to famous firms, cultural field trips, and hands-on experiences are included in the program, for example:- Weekly field trips to explore the great city of Prague and the surrounding area to gain a first-hand insight in this beautiful city and region
- Trip to Karlovy Vary
- Visit of the famous glass factory Moser
- Excursion to Ceský Krumlov
- Visit of the Budvar brewery
- Visit of the spa city Marianske Lazne
- Additional field trips and excursions as decided for each semester's itinerary
Additionally to the regular field trips and excursions, CEPA adds a 3 day/2 night excursion to Berlin

Housing & Meals

Accommodation for CESP students is provided in the Jarov C and Jarov D student dormitory about 20 minutes by tram from the university building. The two modern four-storey buildings are situated in the campus at Jarov, the Prague 3 district on Koněvova street. There are two tram stops.

The residence hall is comprised of double-bed rooms which are located in three-room flat units. Every flat unit consists of:
- a kitchen with a table
- a cupboard (without cooking utensils and dishes)
- an electric hot plate
- a fridge
- a bathroom with a shower, wash-basin and WC
A high-speed internet connection to the University of Economics computer network is available for every student.
The accommodation will be available (free of additional charge) to every student 5 days before the Orientation week starts and 5 days after the official end of the semester.
For lunch and dinner you may take advantage of the student cafeterias located at the University or in the dormitory area. Hot meals usually include soup, main dish and drink.

Buddy System:
Your personal “Czech Student Buddy” will pick you up at the airport and help you get settled into your accommodation.The ESN VŠE Buddy System is an Erasmus Student Network organization that facilitates the social life of foreign students in the Czech Republic. Students from abroad pair up with a Czech student who will help them to settle more easily into the new environment. This service is included as an integral part of your program.
Insurance:
OptionalInternational travel insurance covering health, medical evacuation, repatriation, lost luggage & third party liability can be booked directly though CEPA for an additional fee of $15 per week.

Most forms of financial aid, scholarships and loans may be used as

The University of Economics, Prague (Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze - VŠE) is the leading university in the field of management and economics in the Czech Republic. With more than19,000 students attending courses each year, the university boasts an academic staff of 650 as well as about 500 non-academic staff.The Central and East European Studies Program (CESP) was founded in 1992 as a semester and/or year round program. Courses are taught in English for both undergraduate and graduate level students. VŠE is a member of the AACSB and many other international organizations.
All courses have been fully accredited by the Academic Accreditation Committee of the VŠE.
About the city

Prague, located in the heart of Europe, is the capital of the Czech Republic and the center of the country’s political, economic, social and cultural life. Many visitors find this city one of the safest, most beautiful and exciting cities in Europe and therefore it has become one of the most popular travel destinations along with Budapest and Krakow.
Apparently Prague is not just a favorite destination for the millions of tourists, but also for the majority of students in the Czech Republic, who have rated it as the most popular place to study in the country.
Prague is also one of the oldest capitals in Europe and includes three historical quarters as well as its varying architectural styles, making it absolutely unique. The two most prominent historical landmarks of the city are the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge. The Prague Castle was founded around 880 and is recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of a composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles and is the largest coherent castle complex in the world.
How to apply
The program accepts both graduate and undergraduate students. Admission is based on the student’s university transcript, application, resume (CV), and English language knowledge.Application Requirements:

- A minimum GPA of 2.5 or an equivalent good standing
at the home university - In good academic standing on home campus
