Responsibilities as an Intern
- Visa* – the student/university must make sure that they meet any visa requirements by the German government
- Insurance – students are required to have their own international health and accident insurance, either independently or through CEPA Europe
- Flight arrangements to and from Germany (group flights can also be arranged through CEPA Europe)
*Visa Requirements:
As a general rule, all foreigners staying in Germany for less than 90 days are given an automatic tourist visa upon entry into Germany. For foreigners who intend to stay in Germany for more than 90 days and/or those wanting to work or study in Germany will be required to apply and obtain the appropriate visa and or permits before entering Germany.
Additionally, students who intend to complete an internship in Germany will need to obtain a permit from the ZAV (Central Placement Services Office). This permit application process usually takes up to 3 weeks and the permit is required and necessary to be able to apply for the entry visa. CEPA Europe will advise you and supervise you through this process.
Students who intend to complete an internship in France, the UK or the Netherlands will have to apply for a special work visa. Please contact the appropriate foreign Embassy in your home country for the regulations and detailed information.
U.S. citizens need a valid passport before applying for a visa and both to enter other countries as well as to return to the United States. If a student already has a passport, he/she has to make sure that it is valid until at least six months after the return date. If a student needs to apply for or renew a passport, he/she should APPLY EARLY, since a minimum of five to six weeks are usually required for processing. During peak travel seasons, more processing time is required. Passport forms are available at many federal and state courts, probate courts, some county/municipal offices and some post offices.
For further information please see the website of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs - FAQs about visas in Germany
Although CEPA Europe will make every possible effort to advise and guide your students during the visa and permit process, CEPA can not take responsibility for any changes made by the visa authorities or any pertinent information which is not disclosed by the student to CEPA before CEPA begins the visa application process.
